The largest and most accessible of the north-east states, Assam grows 60% of India's tea. Assam as it is today may be divided into two important physical regions - the Barak valley and the Brahmaputra valley. Assam is dominated by the Brahamaputra river. The total length of the river from the source to the sea is 2900km.

Places to visit
Guwahati: Beside the impressively wide Brahmaputra River, fast growing Guwahati is Assam’s biggest city.
Kamakhya Temple: Guwahati’s best-known temple is Kamakhya Temple on Nilachil Hill, 8 km west of the city.
Assam State Museum: This archaeological and natural history museum has recently been enlarged and is well worth a visit.
Tezpur: On the bank of the Brahmaputra, 198 km from Guwahati, Tezpur is a centre
for the tea industry.
Kaziranga National Park: North-east of Guwahati, on the swampy banks of the  Brahmaputra river, is the Kaziranga National Park, famous as the last major home of Rhinoceros unicornis.
Majuli: is most interesting for its 22 satras, Hindu 'Vaishnavite' 
monasteries that also function as centres for Assamese arts.
