The largest and most
accessible of the north-east states, Assam grows 60% of India's
tea. Assam as it is today
may be divided into two important physical regions - the
Barak valley and the Brahmaputra valley. Assam is dominated by the Brahamaputra river. The total length of the river from the
source to the sea is 2900km.

Guwahati: Beside the impressively wide Brahmaputra River,
fast growing Guwahati is Assams biggest city.
Kamakhya Temple: Guwahatis best-known temple is
Kamakhya Temple on Nilachil Hill, 8 km west of the city.
Assam State Museum: This archaeological
and natural history
museum has recently been enlarged and is well worth a visit.
Tezpur: On the bank of the Brahmaputra, 198 km from
Guwahati, Tezpur is a centre
for the tea industry.
Kaziranga National Park: North-east of Guwahati, on the
swampy banks of the Brahmaputra river, is the Kaziranga National Park, famous as the last
major home of Rhinoceros unicornis.
Majuli: is most interesting for its 22 satras, Hindu 'Vaishnavite'
monasteries that
also function as centres
for Assamese arts.
