Delhi
is the capital of India, it’s third largest city and north India’s
industrial hub. In its great buildings, standing or in ruins, can be seen
the glories of the empires of the ages. In old Delhi you will find many
mosques, monuments and forts relating to India’s Muslim history. New
Delhi was built as the imperial capital of India by the British. It is a
spacious, open city and contains many embassies and government buildings.
In addition to its historic interest and role as the government centre,
Delhi is a major travel gateway.

Red
Fort: The Red Fort dates from the peak of Mughal
power. Today, the fort is typically Indian, with would - be guides
leaping forth to offer their services as soon as you enter. It’s
still a calm haven of peace if you have just left the frantic
streets of old Delhi, however.
Lahore
Gate: The main gate to
the fort takes its name from the fact that it faces towards
Lahore, now in Pakistan. If one spot could be said to be the
emotional and symbolic heart of the modern Indian nation, the
Lahore Gate of the Red Fort is probably it.
Chandni Chowk:
The main street of old Delhi is the colourful shopping bazaar known as Chandni
Chowk.
Raj Ghat:North - east of Feroz
Shah Kotla, on the banks of the Yamuna, a simple square platform of
black marble marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated
following his assassination in 1948. The Raj Ghat area is now a
beautiful place.
Connaught Place: At the
northern end of New Delhi, Connaught Place is the business and
tourist centre. Its vast traffic circle with an architecturally
uniform series of colonnaded buildings around the edge, mainly
devoted to shops, banks, restaurants and airline offices.
Jantar Mantar: Only a short
stroll down Sansad Marg from Connaught Place, this strange
collection of salmon-coloured structures is one of Maharaja Jai
Singh II's observatories.
India Gate: This 42 m high
stone arch of triumph stands at the eastern end of the Rajpath. It
bears the names of 85,000 Indian Army soldiers who died in the
campaigns of the First World War, the North West Frontier operations of the
same time and the 1919 Afghan fiasco.
Rashtrapati Bhavan: The
official residence of the President of India stands at the
opposite end of the Rajpath from India Gate.
Tibet House: This small museum
has a fascinating collection of ceremonial items brought out of
Tibet when the Dalai Lama fled following the Chinese occupation.
Qutab Minar: The buildings in
this complex, 15 km south of Delhi, date from the onset of Muslim
rule in India and are fine examples of early Afghanistan
architecture. The tower has five distinct storeys, each marked by a
projecting balcony.
The Zoo: The Delhi Zoo, on the
south side of Purana Qila, is a peaceful retreat and not bad as
far as zoos in the developing world go. There are white tigers and
even an elephant who plays the harmonica.
National Gallery of Modern Art:This
gallery stands near India Gate at the eastern end of Rajpath, and
was formerly the Delhi residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. It houses
an excellent collection of works by both Indian and colonial
artists.
National Museum: On Janpath,
just south of Rajpath, the National Museum has a pretty good
collection of Indian bronze, terracotta and wood sculptures dating
back to the Mauryan period, exhibits from the Vijayanagar period in
south India, miniature and natural paintings and costumes of the
various tribal peoples.
Crafts Museum: This museum
contains a collection of traditional Indian crafts, textiles, metal
and wood ceramics. The museum is part of a ‘village life
complex' where you can visit rural India without leaving Delhi.
Humayun’s Tomb: This is a
wonderful early example of Mughal architecture. This earlier tomb
is of great interest for its relation to the later Taj. |
